Impact of Travel on Children: why it's good to take your child to travel with you

December 21, 2020

Despite what some people might believe, travel can positively impact your child in multiple ways. It can boost their development by providing opportunities to learn and grow. Take a look at how traveling can be beneficial for children and why it should not be considered a “waste.”

The Benefits of Traveling

First and foremost, traveling provides a hands-on experience. There is no better way to learn about the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World than actually seeing them in person. By visiting different countries, you can learn about their culture, the people, and other valuable information you cannot find in a textbook. This will naturally inspire curiosity, prompting children to ask more questions and play with their imaginations. Furthermore, by participating in different travel activities like horseback riding and skiing, children encounter more chances to be brave and adaptable. The confidence and versatile skills they gain from these experiences will greatly benefit them as they transition into adulthood.

The positive impacts of traveling were also evident in the classroom. According to the Wagner Group, children who took educational trips turned out to have higher incomes and grades later on than those who didn’t. Moreover, 57% of youth travelers got a college degree, while only 33% of non-travelers attained a degree. The University of Georgia also found similar results and saw an increase in grades when students studied abroad. In other words, traveling motivated children to learn, and this enthusiasm stayed with them when they went back to their schools.

Traveling also opens minds, encouraging children to try something new and welcome adventure. Thus, these children became more likely to take risks and less reluctant to say “yes” to new opportunities. It's possible that since they were continuously being pushed to leave their comfort zones, they naturally challenged themselves later on in life as well. Lastly, traveling allows children to take a break from technology, which is something all parents would welcome.

Sweet Tips from Ally:

When you decide to travel with your children once the pandemic is over, make sure to keep these tips in mind:

  1. Provide fun outdoor activities like zip-line to challenge your kids!
  2. Prepare educational trips to encourage learning and asking questions.
  3. Push your kids out of their comfort zones and let them take on new responsibilities.
