Inequality of sexes in workplace - how to build techniques to root it out from the chain of command perspective

December 07, 2020

For many years now, gender inequality has often been a problem in the workplace. However, even though more and more employees are coming forward with their experiences of gender discrimination, it is still deeply rooted and remains as a recurring issue worldwide. So what measures must be taken to completely root out this chain of command perspective once and for all?

1. Be Transparent

The first and foremost step to combating gender bias is handling all gender-related situations and issues transparently. Be open about the actions you plan on taking, what the current situation is like, and show examples of how other companies are working to remove inequality in the workplace. Communicate everything openly so that your employees feel safe and aware.

2. Educate Employees

In order to maintain an environment that is free of gender-based inequality, making sure your employees are all on the same page is necessary. Hold workshops and events to inform workers on issues with gender bias and how the employees can work collectively to fight it. Make sure your employees know which actions and statements signify discrimination and which ones do not. You can even bring in outside speakers or make the workshops part of company retreats so that employees do not feel forced. At the end of the workshop, make sure all workers acknowledge this as a common issue and realize that it is not only limited to females and can very much happen to male workers as well.

3. Close the Gender Pay Gap

Although more and more companies are trying to minimize the difference in pay, it is still a prevalent issue in many industries. The first step to removing the gender pay gap is acknowledging it and figuring out which employees are underpaid. Don’t just look at the salary, but also look into the benefits, overtime pay, and bonuses given out to the workers.

The hiring process is also another way to spot the pay gap. Make sure to review the number of male and female workers that are employed at the different levels of management. If there are fewer females with senior roles, strategize ways to fix this imbalance. A thorough analysis of the company can help to pinpoint the different factors that are causing the internal pay gap.

4. Take Immediate Action

When an employee files a report, the company needs to take action immediately. Do not sit around as this will only escalate the situation. Make sure the victim feels heard and understood, and assure him or her that the company will take all necessary and proper procedures. Conduct interviews, thoroughly investigate, make the employee take responsibility, and take steps to ensure that such an incident will never happen again. Take all accusations seriously and make sure you can provide a safe working environment for all.

Sweet Tip From Ally:

To successfully get rid of gender inequality in the workplace, companies must be transparent and consistently educate their workers. Remember, your employees must always feel heard and safe whenever they are at the company.
