SMEs, no matter how small they are, have the chance to grow a following through content creation. The most successful businesses have an identity, a unique character defined by what they say and how they target their audience. Building a brand around a business involves creating content that will engage clients. SMEs have to figure out a way to make this happen with whatever resources they have at their disposal.

The most important thing is deciding what their business represents and giving that identity is a voice. Depending on the business owner’s own character and what they sell, they could choose to portray themselves as an authority in a chosen field or a citizen concerned about making the health of the planet through conscious consumption. Whatever the mission, it should be something genuinely thought about and accomplished with sincerity.

Once an identity is chosen, SMEs should come up with a plan to find creators that will help them deliver the message, choose platforms they will use to deliver, and decide the frequency with which they’ll post. If they can’t hire an external content creator, the SME should decide how to achieve their goals in-house. This might involve research and learning, but SMEs must ensure that once they start, there must be consistency. This will build trust among followers and establish the business as a trusted source of whatever they’re trying to accomplish.




One of the trickiest things to master in content strategy is Search Engine Optimization. Many SMEs make the mistake of bundling together keywords that clog their content and make no sense. Well-thought-out articles that relate relevant information or quality entertainment will always make more sense to your audience than clickbait. Make sure your content is first well-written and interesting to your audience, then research which keywords would fit in for your SEO strategy. After all, one of the main tenets of SEO is “Content is King” – so a strong content strategy is a key to a good SEO strategy.
